I would rather be a happy, well off doc than a sad-overworked rich one.Īny insight would be greatly appreciated!!įor ophtho you do take call - if you sub specialize in ophtho you take more call even if you do not operate at all in a hospital or cover an ER or inpatient hospital. To prefeace, short of paying off my student loans asap, I am not very driven by money. But, from my research, it seems that something like outpatient surgery isnt really conducive to a 40 hours per week or less setup since: if its your own practice, it will be hard to overcome overhead, or it would be tough to find a physician group who wants to hire someone wanting to work 40 hours or less a week.

Having shadowed several surgeons, something like outpatient orthopedics surgery or some other specialties really appeals to me the most.

My longwinded intro leads me to my main question: How many of you work 40 hours per week or less? What specialties are most accomodating to a lifestyle where you life is not spent at work? I am well aware of the ROAD specialties, but, these arent particularly interesting to me. I have also seen friends with some doctor parents that were always at work and never present, and it is not something I want to emulate. In these interviews, many of the docs say they work 60,70,80 hour work weeks as attendings. That being said, I have recently been listening to various medical podcasts, specifically "The Undifferentiated Medical Student Podcast", where an MS4 interviews a bunch of different physicians to gather insight into their specialty. I know that medicine is the career for me, I just cant imagine doing anything else. I am currently in undergrad and have been listening to the podcast weekly for about a year now, gathering loads of investment information along the way.
